Ikea LATT Kids Table Makeover

Mom Life

When I was pregnant with Leopold, I received the Ikea LATT kids table from a friend who had used it for a party. I loved the simple look of the table and over the last five years this table has been used in just about every room of the house. It’s needed it’s bolts tightened a few times and it has seen it’s share of spills, bumps and scratches but it’s still a great table!

Gross, right?

Lately our LATT table has been a little worse for wear. I’ve started getting more into home projects (hey, it’s 2020…who hasn’t right?) and this one was my second project in a two week span. You can read about my first one by clicking HERE! I gave my old, dated fireplace a gorgeous face lift!

After I got over my irrational hesitation to use wood stain and a hand sander, I was excited to fix up this table. Over and over food, paint, and goodness knows what else would get all gunked up in the creases of this table, and stuck to the sides. Once in a while I’d have to take a paint scraper to the table just to get the food off…it was gross.

SO during nap time one day I just went for it. I grabbed the table and chairs and got to work.

I started by cleaning and sanding down the ENTIRE table. Even the tabletop. Some spots were warped from spills so it was good to have a flat blank slate to work with.

After wiping off the dust, I stained it with the remainder of the “espresso” colored stain I used on the fireplace. I admit I probably should have done another coat or two, but it’s a kids table so I wasn’t really striving for perfection. Plus, my kids had to eat on a tiny breakfast tray for a week and sit on the floor so I was eager to get this done.

Too impatient to wait for the stain to completely dry, I decided to forego using painters tape along the edges and just dump the paint as is.

Picking a color was HARD. I decided to stick to one family of colors so when I mixed the paint I didn’t get BROWN. I had a lot of different purples already on hand so I went with that. Also, I love purple and my kids like pink and blue, respectively- so it was the perfect mix.

I honestly had no clue what I was doing the entire time, but for winging it I’m pretty pleased with the outcome! I was trying to go for a “geode” look, but as you can see it just ended up “swirly”.

Along with the purple acrylic paints I used white, pink, and a white glow in the dark paint. I watered them down just a little…at first I added WAY too much water and had to squeeze out the majority of it, probably wasting a good bit of my paint. Luckily acrylic paint is pretty cheap and I’d say in total I probably used about $5-7 worth. I also threw on some glitter I had on hand because why not add a little sparkle?!

Then I just poured it on the table top and chairs, and slowly turned each one until the paint covered the entire surface. I crossed my fingers that it wouldn’t crack and mix together entirely and let it dry for about two days while I waited on my resin to come in the mail.

I get my epoxy resin from Amazon, and was in luck because the 32oz kit I usually order was on sale from 29.99 to 23.99! Once that came I mixed the entire thing and poured it out over the dried acrylic paint (that luckily still looked nice).

While that set up, I coated the stained wood in polyurethane to seal in the color and add a little shine. You’re supposed to (but you don’t have to) sand it down and do a couple coats to get rid of imperfections and dust, etc, but again this is a kids table and I wasn’t looking for perfection.

I then let the resin set for about two days before bringing it in. I LOVE it!

Happy Birthday Mama โค
Another day spent outside! I felt every move I mad Another day spent outside! I felt every move I made in bed last night after trimming 4 huge overgrown but dead/dying bushes down to the trunks so we can rip them out and plant more veggies. But getting back out there today was all I could think about! Luckily my friend came over and helped me move everything and hang stuff and she even brought kids to entertain mine. AND she gave me all the stuff in this photo to create the cutest little garden station! It was so nice this morning but ended up being pretty hot! I love having @liquidiv in my tool kit to help me stay hydrated! They gifted me a few boxes recently and it feels so good to have a fresh stock! I tried the "energy" flavor and I don't know if it worked but I did get the garage clean and pushed myself from 9:30-4! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป who needs a gym! And yeah...I'm wearing the shorts again ๐Ÿ˜…

I never watched Tiger King beyond one episode but I'm really going for the Carole Baskin vibe ๐Ÿ˜† I can't get enough cheetah print! And I loved last years @fabletics cheetah shorts so much that I got the exact same pair again. So don't judge if that's all you see me wear. They are clean! What's your go to comfy summer look?

After a year of watching Leopold on his balance bike, Finley finally decided to try and keep up with him! She made it all the way around the block last night on Leopold's old @toot_scoot balance bike and then went even father tonight. We lifted the seat a bit after yesterday and you can tell the difference in the two videos! So proud of these kids! (Also peep two days of Limited Too tees that I thrifted ๐Ÿ˜†)

We went when Leopold was 1.5 and then 2.5 but have missed the last two years. It was only $16 for the four of us and there was so much to do! Easter bunny photos, pony rides, playgrounds, a petting/feeding "zoo" area, hay rides, and egg hunts! We even got to share the morning with a good bit of family and friends ๐Ÿฅฐ.
Finley's notable moment of the day was that she got to see a horse poop ๐Ÿ’ฉ. When I asked if she had another favorite part of the day she said "Daddy!" ๐Ÿ˜ Leopold loved the egg hunt and pony rides! Did you do anything fun today?

Thank you to the women who post the things they love about their bodies, and their insecurities too. Sharing positive affirmations, teaching people that fat doesn't necessarily mean unhealthy, and reminding me that I'm my own worst critic. I see beautiful women sharing these things every day and it really helps me to be able to see the beauty in myself more clearly. I've also come to realize that we aren't all designed to be the same shape and size. All my life I wanted to be fit, have a tiny waist and less thunderous thighs. Then I realized that maybe I'm just not built to be a sports illustrated model. Why make myself miserable trying to be one? I'm always working on loving my body no matter what it looks like, some days are easier than others.

Photo cred to Leopold, who took a few like this then said "okay mom now look really serious. Now do one where you look like a famous person!" ๐Ÿคฉ I was so proud.

Swipe to see my garden 2 weeks ago vs. Today! I'm so proud of our progress ๐Ÿ˜Š. Now hopefully by the end of summer we will see some life blooming out of those tires! Seedlings in progress are jalapeรฑos, peppers and mint. In line for planting is garlic, mini watermelon, Lettuce, squash and tomatoes. We also planted 3 blueberry bushes, a blackberry vine, and an apple tree (yeah just one, apparently it's self fertilizing). I'm nervous starting my veggies from seeds so I might also go get a couple actual plants to add in there...we'll see. Are you growing anything this spring? I usually kill every plant I touch (see the 3 in the garden that are already wilting) but I'm trying to learn and be better!

I was going to save it for Easter but when it came right before our trip I thought it would be a cool thing to entertain the kids with while we were hanging out at the cabin! It was also a great way to celebrate with Leopold the fact that he got into the school we applied for! Still only 70% sure that's the one we will pick...but why not celebrate?! These would definitely make great Easter basket stuffers for your little Trolls lovers! I'm excited to build the Lego set!

4 generations! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ I think I resemble my mom a lo 4 generations! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ
I think I resemble my mom a lot, and I see a lot of Finley in the photo of my grandma! What do you think? (And enjoy a couple outtakes of silly Finley)

5 years ago was the hardest day of my life, when I lost my mom/best friend. It's one of the hardest parts of being a mom for me. That I can't call my mom to laugh or cry about my kids' antics or my reactions to those behaviors. I hate that I can't call her to say she was right about so many things, or that I can now relate to her in so many more ways. I can't give her a million hugs knowing how badly she struggled with her mental health with little to no support system. I saw her go through things without thinking twice about them until I was a mom myself and felt those things firsthand or saw friends struggle with them. Anxiety, depression, body image problems /serial dieting, and watching friends come and go. I wish I could tell her that I get it now and that she was never alone in those feelings. She just wasn't lucky enough to have a virtual village to help her through a lot of those things back when I was little. I'll never stop whining about the fact that we can't have special days with the kids like I am lucky to have with my mother in law. She would be so proud of me and these amazing kids, I just know it โคโค. Never take your parents for granted. Never underestimate the power of having a village behind you either.

I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always. As long as I'm living my mama you'll be ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’œ (still can't read that book to my kids ๐Ÿ˜ญ)
