One of Leopold’s favorite books lately has been the one pictured above. It’s called “I Love Colors” and it was published in the early 2000s. I don’t know where we got it and I honestly couldn’t tell you where to find it now! I will link some similar books below that will give you the same effect.
This book is all about this pup who wants to paint and keeps falling in his paints. He starts with his tail/behind, then his head and shoulders, feet, and tail. Eventually the colors start to mix and blend together, creating new colors!
My son is fascinated by this and loves discovering what colors are made when you mix two together!
I thought this would be an easy activity to do…turns out I was right!
I cut up an old white dish rag to resemble the parts of a dog. I used rubber bands to section it off a little better and it turned out pretty good, all things considered.
Leopold drew some eyes and a mouth on his pup with a marker and I let him add the food coloring to the water.
We started out with the colors in the book: Blue, red and yellow. I then read the book to him and had him dip his dog in the colors just like the dog in the book.
At the end of the book, the dog jumps in a pool of water and gets clean again, so we also kept a dish with clean water so he could clean his dog. It actually worked pretty well aside from him wanting fresh water every couple of minutes.
Leopold was delighted to see the colors mixing and changing! We went through the book about twice and then I let him play on his own while I cleaned up from breakfast.
This activity occupied him for quite a while! He even told me he wanted to play for THREE HOURS. Our activity got cut short though, due to water getting EVERYWHERE.
It’s a fun activity but I’d suggest doing it outside, or on a few towels. Just be prepared for a wet mess!
