I just spent a week at the beach and it was a very welcome vacation! But also VERY EXHAUSTING. My generous family let Leopold and I stay with them at their beach house for the week, and with my sister and her family a few blocks down, I had plenty of help with him. If it was just us there is no way I could have done it! Sadly my husband couldn’t come with us since he didn’t want to use his time off right before baby came. But to be fair, he isn’t the biggest fan of the beach.
When I initially thought of this vacation, I thought there was a good chance I’d gain a lot of my pregnancy weight during this week. Eating out, chilling on the beach, the perfect recipe for gaining 20 pounds, right?! WRONG. I go see my doctor Monday and won’t weigh myself until then, but after all the cardio I put in (and the sweat) I doubt I gained a ton.
Walking to the beach and on the beach and climbing stairs (lots of stairs), chasing my toddler, often carrying my toddler, etc, made for a sweaty mama! If I was lucky enough to have someone there to carry Leopold, I was usually carrying something else! Honestly I was a little surprised I didn’t go into early labor with all of the exercise and bumpy golf cart rides! I did have a lot of Braxton Hicks Contractions!
Luckily I took along my Tums and Tylenol, because I did suffer from major heartburn and minor headaches while I was there. Not to mention I got a charlie horse in one leg or the other EVERY NIGHT while I slept. On our last day at the beach we had planned to hit the waves one last time, but I just couldn’t make it happen. I was wiped out and I think Leopold was too, a little bit!
One thing that was high on my list while I was on Edisto was to visit Botany Bay and take a few maternity photos. I didn’t bring along a photographer but I think my sister, niece and brother in law did a pretty fine job snapping some shots!
I walked the long walk to the shore wearing my converse with shorts and a tank top. Once we got out on the beach, I swapped that outfit for my gorgeous lace dress from Pink Blush! They sent me this dress a few days before I left and I was so glad it fit so well! It’s an XL and almost a little snug in places, but not uncomfortably so. I’ll admit, I do love how this dress makes my boobs look! It’s usually hard to find something that will hold them in place, but this dress did the trick!
The way it fits my bump is perfect too, and it isn’t such an obvious maternity piece that I can’t wear it once I have my baby.
We snapped some photos at a beautifully secluded stretch of beach and I eventually gave up and borrowed my niece’s scrunchie (how great is it that those are in style again?) because having my hair down was WAY too hot.
I LOVE Botany Bay because it’s got that ‘untouched’ feel to it. You’re not allowed to take shells home with you, so the shore is lined with conch shells and driftwood as well as ancient trees that have been smoothed down by sand and wind. The walk there is gorgeous too, because you’re surrounded by marshes and palm trees! Driving in, you pass under huge knotted trees covered in hanging moss. That moss always reminds me of my mom, because she loved the way it looked SO much and was always wonder struck when she saw trees like these.
The photos we got under the trees were taken a little too late in the day and came out sort of dark which is why they appear a bit grainy after I lightened them up. I still love them though!
