An Au Pair in Germany: April 17th, 2010

An Au Pair in Germany

April 17th

My year spent as an au pair in Germany, told in many parts. 2010-2011

I love days like today.

I would say that so far, today would be my ‘ideal day’. I woke up at 9 and showered with no rush on my part (rushing sucks, especially straight out of bed). Unfortunately I missed the big group breakfast in the dining room, but somebody saved me a croissant and I paired that with some homemade jam and a macchiato. I believe this is what they eat in Heaven.

The friends of the family will be here until after Clara’s party tomorrow, and they spent a lot of time playing with the older kids today which was nice for me.

I stayed in the kitchen with K and baked! We made a huge elaborate version of strawberry shortcake for the party tomorrow, and K made some strange concoction that she calls ‘cereal’ that is totally not cereal. It is cream and fruit and other things I can’t recall. It will probably taste amazing, though. We also got the mix ready to make breakfast bread tomorrow. Its sweet bread that is braided.

Later our whole crew piled into two cars and went out for lunch. We went to a town called Grossweil and ate at ‘Platzl’. Whenever we go out to eat I feel strange that I can’t read the menu so I just pretend to read it and see if I can pick out any familiar words until someone offers to help. I have become quite fond of Coke light (as it is called here) because if you order water it comes fizzy, and I am not really sure about anything else. K suggested that I order the Rigatoni, so I did. It was SO GOOD. They brought it out in the frying pan on top of a plate. It was Rigatoni noodles smothered in cheese with pieces of chicken breast on top and a seasonal herb they call ‘Baerlauch’. [I unfortunately have not yet found the English equivalent of this, but it is so delicious and grows wild].

After dinner we went back to the house and had a glorious nap. After nap time we had macchiatos and cake on the terrace (the temperature out was nothing short of perfection) Then a few of us went sailing! It was my first time REALLY sailing. It was fun (although a bit cold with the wind) and also a bit scary! I wish there had been a sign that said “WARNING: extreme turns” because I was constantly freaking out in my head that we were going to go into the water.

After our sailing trip it was dinner time for the kids, and then bedtime.
I will not sugar coat this, Clara was a terror tonight. She wanted her daddy to put her to bed, and he was staying downstairs, so she flailed and hit and screamed for a good 30 minutes while we three women tried to get her ready for bed. I think to rebel she decided to sleep on the (hardwood) floor, which made her happy somehow.

Sounds like a great day! What a fun experience to be an au pair. You have memories you will carry with you forever! Just curious, do you ever still keep in touch with the kids/family?

I do!! We send pictures back and forth and they send a card and chocolate every year at Christmas! I went back to visit a couple years ago, and my dad even stayed with him a few days when he was over there last year! They are family now 🙂

What an incredible experience! I used to nanny and always dreamed of being an au pair. It’s ironic because I watched two boys who would have play dates with a neighbor. Their au pair was from Germany and she was so lovely. She talked about how Americans just don’t know how to live (or eat!) and now hearing a play-by-play, I can see she wasn’t kidding!! This was a joy to read! 🙂

I’m glad you like it!! It’s true! I would love to live there if I didn’t miss it here so much when I’m over there haha. But now that most of my family is gone, I totally would if I could convince my husband!

My littlest one has done that sleep on the floor rebellion before! It is actually a huge relief to see that another kid does (or did) that too…and all the way in Germany! Whew!
Anyway, this trip sounds amazing. The food in this post..wow! And I truly love your photography.

Happy #internationalwomensday! To the fiercely ind Happy #internationalwomensday! To the fiercely independent and strong willed (like... really strong willed) stubborn, silly, kind, adventurous, little girls and the exhausted women raising them 😅. Don't worry y'all all of this will create a real awesome grown up woman...it's just a walk through a funhouse right now! Twists and turns, reflections of yourself, maybe some scary parts or things that make you wanna pee your pants... but fun overall 😅.
We had a movie night tonight thanks to @sewchamber We had a movie night tonight thanks to @sewchambers and Disney plus! Have you watched Raya and the Last Dragon yet!? It was SO cute and Leopold loved it!! Finley watched about half of it and kept saying "oh my GOSH!" We made a bunch of popcorn for Leopold and me and Finley got some "puffed corn". Don't @ me if you see my hair looking like the dragons hair because omg it's so amazing 😍😆.

From my first Barbie skates to my new @impalaskate and I'm still dressing like I'm 7 years old 😂. Overalls and a fanny pack and not at all mad about it. It was so nice to get out with some other skaters tonight and practice on top of a parking garage...and the weather was AMAZING! What's something you did as a kid that you think would be fun to pick up again as an adult?

📖 When the p@ndemic made it's way to the coloni 📖 When the p@ndemic made it's way to the colonies of the Southern Carolinas, no one was truly prepared for it. These women knew their already small town would feel even smaller as the townsfolk retreated into their homes, locking the doors and drawing the curtains in fear of what was to come. They knew they needed to band together and lean on one another to keep the children feeling a sense of normalcy and calm as the men worked the front lines each day. As their simple life on the Prarie became both more plain and more complicated, they were glad to have one another to keep insanity at bay. 🌾🌾

The children were no longer able to spend mornings in the schoolhouse a few miles down the road. Instead, lessons were prepared nightly by thier mothers and painstakingly enforced each morning. 🌾🌾

The chores seemed to grow exponentially while the release of a ride into town or a visit with friends became things of the past. 🌾🌾

Wake at dawn. Be a teacher. Bake the bread and put on the stew to be ready by evening. Sweep the walk. Tend the garden and feed the chickens. Darn the socks and mend the clothes. Do the washing. All while maintaining composure and grace for the sake of our families. 🌾🌾

It's been a long, hard year. It's getting better but it's not over yet. But they have each other and they are grateful for this life out here on the Prarie. 🌾🌾

I found Finley a tennis racket at Goodwill on Sund I found Finley a tennis racket at Goodwill on Sunday so we went to try out and you can tell they are both FEELING IT. Our second time out on the court we taught Leopold how to be our ball boy and he took it very seriously. He lined up a few balls so they were ready to get in the game, and quickly picked up on when mom or dad scored a point and how to slide in and grab the balls that hit the net. Finley spent her time watering the court with her sippy cup, crunching leaves, and bringing James his water bottle. So I guess that means we have a ball boy and a water girl?
I did it 👀 I bought the skates 🙊. I was act I did it 👀 I bought the skates 🙊.
I was actually pretty shocked at how easily skating came back to me after more than 10 years! I've been watching tons of videos while I waited for my skates to arrive of other people starting out and I fully expected to fall a LOT and be super shaky! Well knock on wood...I haven't fallen at all yet! I'm sure I will eventually but yesterday was definitely a good start to my (other) new hobby! After this and walks and tennis two days in a row I'm feeling rather like a blob 🥴. But... in a good way 💪🏻!
I'm here to say, do the thing you have been too afraid to do. Or that you have been putting off because of kids. Just do it! You got this!
We hit the courts today for the first time! We hav We hit the courts today for the first time! We have been fairly sedentary lately (me and James) and it felt good to just get out in the sunshine and move our bodies in new ways! We both enjoy tennis and technically we pay our HOA to use these courts so we figured we might as well get our money's worth!! Plus it is a great way to bond a little bit more as a couple and teach our kids new things. We can't wait to get back out there!

That's it... that's the post for today. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Another beautiful day and one more win for nature Another beautiful day and one more win for nature over playgrounds 🙌🏻. We spent about 30 minutes at the playground today before the kids spent a solid hour in the river! The enjoyment they got out of finding bugs, playing in the mud and splashing in the water hardly even compared to the slides and swings! We even got in some bike riding, a walk, and another playground. After a quick break at home we went to soccer practice! I think we are all sleeping good tonight!!
Maybe we will just start our own little @freefores Maybe we will just start our own little @freeforestschool since our chapter isn't doing anything these days. Just...probably with less snack sharing. We pretty much did it today when our kids flocked to the water and chose rocks, sticks and mud over swings and slides! We packed in some good ole natural immunities before we went to karate with a friend and then gymnastics! It was an action packed, BEAUTIFUL day and this mom is TIRED and maybe a little overstimulated, not gonna lie 😅🥴.
We had our own snow day today! I let the kids make We had our own snow day today! I let the kids make a mess so I could have 30 minutes of quiet time. We found some of that "magic" instant snow at the Target dollar spot today...I may have to go snag some more! The kids had a blast using their (gifted) @sandpal_toys to play! Too cold for the beach, too warm for real snow...gotta make our own! And naturally an important 2nd step to messy sensory play...cause and effect! Leopold even enjoyed the next part which was vacuuming up all the mess that ended up on the carpet. Win win!
"Gymmy-nasicks" week 2 and the enthusiasm is still "Gymmy-nasicks" week 2 and the enthusiasm is still through the roof! Swipe to see evidence 👀. She also loves that she gets gummies after class 🤪. Finley loves doing handstands against the wall, swinging on the bar, and running really fast yelling "CATBOY, GECKO!" and then launching herself onto one of the pieces of soft equipment 😆. It's so fun to watch and she's having a blast! Also 👀 the high top Vans I found for $4 last weekend 🤑. Definitely new favorites!
Just posing with my friends roller skates, kinda w Just posing with my friends roller skates, kinda wishing I had my own 🙈🙊. I mentioned it to my husband and he laughed and said no WAY I'll get into roller skating. Part of me knows he's right but the other part wants to prove him wrong 😆. Just not ready to break my wrist.

I see all of you with your snow days and I'll raise you a chilly SC day where I wore my beloved @fabletics bike shorts and took a walk with friends. I'm a little jealous of the snow but I just want one day of it...that's all. Then I had a fun trip to urgent care (see my stories) which I haven't had to do in many many years.

After my wisdom teeth and now this pain I've been dealing with, I'm really ready to get moving again!! Remember you can get 2 for $24 leggings from #fabletics on thier website! Check out the link in my bio to get there.

We had these box bottoms from an Aldi trip and I s We had these box bottoms from an Aldi trip and I saw the perfect opportunity for this activity! The kids were entertained by this for quite a while and then enjoyed a nice long bath afterwards where they also cleaned up the painted cars. Sound up for Leopold's cute voice over!
"Alright Leopold now I want you to pretend you're "Alright Leopold now I want you to pretend you're asleep... but don't forget you're still a MODEL. Make sure that shows in your film." -Mr. Jay, ANTM

Yeah I'm still binge watching Top Model 😆 after like 19 seasons you start thinking like them.

When you spend 90% of your time in pajamas, it's worth it to get nice + cute ones! We are loving these new ones from @ergopouch_usa (gifted). They are not too hot not too cold...perfect for these southern winters when the weather could go either way! Have you acquired lots more pajamas over the last year?? We sure have!
